Understanding ATAR, VCE, and VCE Vocational Major
ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) The ATAR is a ranking system used by universities across Victoria for admissions. It is calculated based on a student’s VCE scores, factoring in the scaling of different subjects. The ATAR is not a score but a percentile ranking that reflects a student’s performance relative to their peers. It’s crucial for students aiming for competitive courses, as many universities use ATAR thresholds for selection.
VCE vs. VCE Vocational Major
- VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education): The traditional academic pathway designed for students planning to pursue university studies. It includes a broad range of subjects and is suited for students interested in an ATAR-based university entrance.
- VCE Vocational Major (VM): This is an applied learning stream focused on hands-on, industry-specific skills. It includes work placements and is tailored for students interested in vocational education and training (VET) pathways or direct entry into the workforce. Unlike the standard VCE, the VCE VM does not provide an ATAR, but it prepares students for various TAFE courses and apprenticeships.
